COURT ALLOWS SERVICE OF PROCESS BY ELECTRONIC MEANS | Key Points
“In recognition of society’s increased use of electronic methods to communicate,” and effective immediately, the Illinois Supreme Court amended Rule 102 pertaining to service of a summons and complaint. Subsection (f) of rule 102 now provides that a party can serve a summons and complaint on another party by (1) social media, (2) e-mail, or (3) text message. A special court order is required and there are additional requirements; however, these changes should streamline service of process and speed up the litigation process as a whole.
